Above is a timeline of 5 thriller films over the decade. From looking at 'The third man' which was released in 1949 compared to 'Sinister' released in 2012, we see the drastic changes which have took place to enhance the fear factor in thriller films.
Firstly the third man is in black and white, which currently is very rare for someone of this time to watch.

From this clip we see that the film is not in continuous shots, so the audience are able to see the cut shots, and that the film is in a very slow pace, causing not much tension to be built up. Compared to the clip from sinister below, where we see a continous shot, showing how the film links to eachother. Also low key lighting is used, to help create tension, and build suspense, where as the third leg could not do that as it was filmed in black and white.
